THE GA6 DEBATE
The GA6s biggest themes are preventing terrorism and building infrastructure and how these major international problems concerning those can be solved.
Of all the points stated, Vietnam's repeating ideas on how any kind of religion would lead to terrorism stood out since the country has a socialist government that feels threatened by any kind of freedom of worship. The Vietnamese delegate was verbally attacked by many including the French delegate who described his statement as an "uneducated comment". Other highlights of the debate included the Russian delegate who refused to sit down and the Egyptian delegate who called out the Chinese delegate by asking him if there is a correlation between people addicted to drugs and people who are disabled in his opinion.
Big parts of the discussion concerned the monitoring of UN peacekeeping missions and the risk assessment that has to be done to protect civilian lives in hostage situations and the creation of an international fund to pay for refugees. Another central point was the Chinese delegate's resolution, which supported disabled people by providing jobs, clothes and housing via the United Nations. This change was supported by most European countries except Estonia, whose delegate was strongly against fixed payments for disabled people. She was supported by third world countries such as Rwanda and Somalia.
When the payment for refugees was discussed, the US delegate refused to pay a predetermined amount of money and proposed a voluntary payment, which would mean that every country could decide if, and how much money they want to pay. Egypt and other less wealthy countries strongly disagreed.
Other interesting themes discussed were child labour and child protection. On these topics the Iranian delegate stated a peculiar point which included that children older than five years should work. This was a heavily criticized point but it seemed to be based on a misunderstanding. Since the Iranian delegate later apologised and stated that he didn't mean to say anything like that and that the Islamic Republic of Iran was ready to find progressive solutions to protect children and minorities in general
Other issues concerning financial interest were generally supported by most countries even though countries such as Estonia or Finland were interested in a payment form that would include an amount of money that would stand in relation to the paying country's wealth.
Although the assembly's chair, Cris Gavriliu, complained about the lack of experience by the delegates, the discussion was calm and there weren't any complications.
